After numerous workshop presentations in the first semesters, students will present their first major ensemble work at the Wilhelma Theatre to a larger external audience by the beginning of the 3rd year of study. This production in the independent, professionally working theatre of the university is directed by an external director (deliberately not by lecturers). Prior to this, scenes were developed on the work stage with lecturers or completely independently. Now, the students work within the conditions of a professional theater operation to shape the work processes of a production from the construction rehearsal to the premiere. Students experience a normal performance routine in at least ten public performances.

In the same year of study, students participate in another ensemble production in a coproduction at the Staatstheater Stuttgart. Optionally, students gain additional external professional experience through a "Schauspielstudio." They apply for individually researched productions to gain further work experience in acting areas. This time is accompanied by mentors from the HMDK.

In the 4th year of study, we further focus on the individual artistic development of the students. The area of film acting is substantially deepened, practical experiences at institutional and independent theatres, and the design and realization of own projects are optionally supported and supervised according to individual emphases.

The future graduates participate in various auditions in Stuttgart, Neuss, Munich, and Berlin. Additionally, each student works on an individual scenic and musical audition repertoire. The 10-week film acting workshop in cooperation with the Baden-Württembergischen Filmakademie in Ludwigsburg deepens the knowledge acquired in previous semesters. Professionals in various areas of the film industry teach the complexity and craft of film acting in all its aspects: film actors, directors, acting coaches, cameramen, producers, screenwriters, acting agents, and casting directors.

Practical, as well as theoretical exercises take place in all areas of filmmaking, sometimes in collaboration with students from the Film Academy specializing in scenic direction, screenwriting, camera/cinematography, editing, and sound in addition to the HMDK students. Furthermore, we support and encourage the option to participate as an "extraordinary ensemble member" for part of the season at a cooperating theater in what is called a "schauspielstudio."

We have a longstanding collaboration with the Schauspiel Stuttgart, the Staatstheater Darmstadt, the Staatstheater Mainz, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, and last but not least with the children's and youth theater "Junges Ensemble Stuttgart“. Those who want to independently develop their own projects in cooperation with fellow students from their own or other programs can find opportunities to do so within the university and beyond – see also CAMPUS GEGENWART. Faculty members of the HMDK can be consulted and invited for support. In-depth insights into the independent scene and its production conditions are optionally offered in theory (calculation, application, etc.) and practice to prepare for non-institutional work forms.

Registration is open to all individuals with sufficient knowledge of the German language (B2). Currently, all classes are conducted in spoken German. Having a high school diploma is not required for a drama study. Individuals with a high school diploma or specialized university entrance qualification automatically possess the so-called higher education entrance qualification. Those applicants who have passed the entrance exam (all 3 rounds) but do not have the higher education entrance qualification must take an additional talent test. Passing the artistic entrance exam is a prerequisite for this.

Is there an age restriction? No. We recommend that applicants are not older than 25 years at the start of the study. However, older applicants also have the chance to secure a spot in the program.

How many times can I apply? More than two admission exams at HMDK are not allowed. This includes applicants who have registered but did not show up and did not provide a medical certificate.

With an additional aptitude test, you can study with us even without a high school diploma - Here, individuals without university entrance qualification (Abitur/fachgebundene Hochschulreife) demonstrate in a written and oral examination that they are suitable for university studies. Specifically, this means: proving the general knowledge required for the acting program through a written examination on a text with current themes and cultural references. They have 150 minutes for this.

After that, an oral examination takes place (about 20 minutes). Possible topics include content, requirements, and cultural contexts of the desired field of study. Here, you demonstrate your ability to study, your particular interest in the field of study, and your level of general knowledge. The non-public examination is conducted as an individual examination or in a group. The examination time per person remains the same.

Zwischenprüfung:
Vorspiel einer Einzel- und einer Duo-Szene, die mit Hauptfachlehrern erabeitet wurden, wobei die Dauer eines Monologs nicht 10 Minuten, die einer Zweierszene nicht 15 Minuten überschreiten darf, Kolloquium mit der Kommission.

Abschlussprüfung
Vorspiel einer eigenständig erarbeiteten, frei gewählten Rolle von bis zu 15 Minuten Länge. Kolloquium mit der Kommission.
Sollte sich ein Student zum Ende des 8. Semesters bereits im festen Engagement befinden, kann ein ausführliches Prüfungsgespräch das Vorspiel der Bachelor-Rolle ersetzen.
