Campus Gegenwart

The present is at the center.

The CAMPUS GEGENWART is a "Landeszentrum" for networking in practice and reflection. It is part of the HMDK Stuttgart and collaborates with the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. The CAMPUS GEGENWART is a place where interdisciplinary artistic methods are explored and transdisciplinary performance can be tested. It invites people to collectively confront the possibilities and impossibilities of a critical contemporary artistic practice, whose thinking and actions cannot be separated from societal issues, it creates bridges between disciplines, and invents new forms of collaboration.

The Campus Gegenwart as an interface

The Campus Gegenwart as an interface

In addition to the HMDK, the CAMPUS GEGENWART serves as an interface between it and the other artistic universities in Stuttgart - the Academy of Fine Arts, the Merz Akademie and also the University of Stuttgart. Exchange takes place in teaching, artistic work, research, and public engagement: The courses of the different institutions are mutually accessible, shared artistic research and publication projects are developed together, and joint public events signify a visible networking in the urban space.

Master's program "Theory and Practice of Experimental Performance"

The Master's program "Theory and Practice of Experimental Performance" at the CAMPUS GEGENWART explores a transdisciplinary performance and training practice that equally challenges all disciplines and individually supports students with diverse educational backgrounds. The goal is to create a space for artistic experiments and playful encounters. The courses at the CAMPUS GEGENWART are open to students from all fields of study at the university, inviting them to move beyond the boundaries of their own discipline, engage in collective and alternative working processes, and reflect on music, art, society, and the present in fundamental ways.

The research at the CAMPUS GEGENWART delves into questions of artistic interdisciplinarity, transitions, and intermediate phenomena. It focuses on current issues within individual disciplines, as well as broader themes at the intersection of theory and practice, such as the political in art, various approaches to artistic research, theories of collectivity, navigating decolonial and neomaterialist discourses in artistic work, artificial intelligence, and, generally, developing a notion of performance that is responsive to contemporary developments and challenges.
