Institute for Piano

In the Bachelor's programme, there are curriculums available with a variety of focuses: students can choose to give their education a purely artistic, pedagogical, or scientific emphasis, or study combinations of these three areas. Already in the Bachelor's programme, each student can come into contact with various perspectives of the professional field of "pianist". This way, students can be offered the best possible opportunity for individual development.

In the "Master" study programme, pianists are not only trained as soloists, but also have the opportunity to specialize in piano chamber music, piano duo, accompanying, Lied, and new music. The Master's program "Historical Keyboards" by Prof. Dr. Stefania Neonato offers students access to a comprehensive collection of instruments in addition to a collaboration with the Württemberg State Museum. The HMDK owns copies or original instruments by Stein, Walter, Stoddart, Böhm, Erard. For pedagogical excellence, the program "Master Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy (IGP)" at the HMDK Stuttgart is a leading example, spearheaded by Prof. Ulrike Wohlwender. The most recent addition to our Master's education at the HMDK is the world's first "Master Improvisation" programme under the direction of Prof. Dr. Noam Sivan.

High-quality instruments are available for piano training at the HMDK Stuttgart. The main practice rooms are all equipped with Steinway & Sons grand pianos of the D-274 and B-211 models. The concert halls also have a total of six Steinway D-274 pianos that meet the highest standards. In the course of the SIRIUS 6.0 research, one of these instruments was recently equipped with a second keyboard of reduced scale. Another grand piano with narrower keys is available for students to practice on.
