Master Lied

The aim of the study is to further develop the artistic personality and to professionalize musical, literary, and reflective competencies.

Graduates should be able to perform songs at a high technical and artistic level and independently develop and work on song recital formats and programs.

Lied is understood as chamber music, therefore working as a duo is the focus. However, applications are possible not only as a duo but also individually as singers and pianists.

In addition to main subject classes, there is a wide range of options in two elective areas which allow students to freely choose additional courses.

Specifically, students should

  • develop an understanding of literary texts and their settings and be able to interpret songs from all eras and styles convincingly
  • acquire an overview of the entire genre of Lied with its various manifestations (Mélodie, Canzone, Song) and gain specific knowledge in the field of literature or stylistics of Lied
  • have a diverse repertoire of rehearsal and practice strategies to work on songs of different styles, eras, and languages based on various performance practices
  • deepen their artistic expressive abilities through additional subjects such as voice or speaking (for pianists)

Further teaching offers and seminars such as contemporary song, musicology, and career-related offers like music management and music education complete the training. Starting from the winter semester 2024/2025, it will be possible to study the program "concert exam Lied" at the HMDK. Applications are possible as duos or individually as singers and pianists. A completed Master's degree in Lied or a similar program is required.
