Research

The central tasks of the HMDK Stuttgart include scientific and artistic-scientific research and teaching. At the university, science conveys, expands, and revises “classical” educational content, offers a forum for critical reflection in artistic practice, and provides its own impulses, such as repertoire expansion or historically informed interpretation. Conversely, the scientific fields benefit from the immediate proximity to their "subject".

Scientific research is defined at art universities as it is at scientific universities. Research is oriented in the humanities and cultural studies as well as scientifically and technologically. The results feed back into teaching, forming the basis of research-oriented teaching.

The range of scientific components in teaching extends from overview lectures and seminars to postgraduate programs and Ph.D. (Dr. phil.) in Musicology and Music Education. The complementary offer of an artistic-scientific doctorate (DMA) is being prepared, in which scientific work and artistic practice are particularly closely related.

Information on the subjects Musicology, Music Communication, Music Education, and Music Theory can be found in the section of the Institute for Musicology, Music Education, and Aesthetics of Faculty I.

We offer the following postgraduate programs in the scientific or artistic-scientific field:

Master Musicology (M.A.)

Master Music Theory (M.Mus.)

Doctorate (Dr. phil.) in the subjects of Musicology, Music Education, and Philosophy
