Master Musicology

You can study the Master Musicology at the HMDK Stuttgart if you have completed a basic study at a music university (Bachelor's degree or equivalent), a Bachelor's degree in Musicology at a university (or a comparable degree), or a teaching degree in music education.

The Master Musicology can be studied in two variants:

  1. Musicology with a minor subject at the university.
  2. Musicology/Artistic discipline with a minor subject at the university.

In the Master's program Musicology with a minor subject at the university, the focus of the training is on academic work in the areas of musicology and humanities at the university. In Musicology this includes taking two seminars in Historical Musicology, one seminar in Systematic Musicology, and one seminar in Source Studies/Palaeography . In the elective area, modules such as Analysis and Counterpoint as well as artistic-practical subjects like Composition and Conducting are available.

In the Master's program Musicology/Artistic discipline with a minor subject at the university, the focus of the training, in addition to academic work in musicology and humanities at the university, is on further artistic professionalization. In Musicology, there is one seminar each in Historical Musicology, Systematic Musicology, and Source Studies/Palaeography to be completed. In the elective area, modules such as Analysis and Counterpoint as well as artistic-practical subjects like Composition and Conducting are available.

The Master's program provides the prerequisites for a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and artistic-scientific research in the field of musicology.

The Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Stuttgart opens its course offerings according to the requirements described in the module handbooks. Specific recommendations are provided for beginners in the respective subjects.
