Born in Ludwigsburg in 1960. Studied music education (majoring in organ with Jon Laukvik), German literature, and conducting. Student of Helmut Lachenmann.
Has been teaching at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart since 1987, becoming a professor in 1991.
Has been Vice-President since 2007.
Completed a PhD in 2013 on "Compositional Techniques in Music between 1975 and 2003" (Boulez, Feldman, Hidalgo, Kurtág, Lachenmann, Nono).
Guest conducting engagements include appearances with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Frankfurt Opera, RSB Berlin, RSO Stuttgart, ORTVE Madrid, RAI National Symphony Orchestra Turin, Porto Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, SWR Symphony Orchestra Freiburg and Baden-Baden, Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, and Taipei National Symphony Orchestra. Guest conducting at university orchestras in Basel, Beijing, and Stockholm.
Member of the program committee for EPARM conferences (European Platform for Artistic Research in Music) of the AEC since 2017.
Guest professorships in Krakow (Jagiellonian University and Music Academy), Warsaw, Katowice, Poznan, Lodz, Kiev, and Moscow.
Author of books on the analysis of New Music and musical forms in the Baroque and Classical periods. Conducts teacher training programs on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Culture since 1998. Translation of selected writings by Helmut Lachenmann into Polish.
As a composer, commissioned works for festivals and ensembles, as well as incidental music for plays.
