Since 2003, the HMDK Stuttgart has had the right to grant doctoral degrees in the fields of Musicology and Music Pedagogy, in philosophy since 2019, and also the right to grant post-doctoral lecturing qualifications (Habilitation) in all three fields since 2005.

Admission to the doctoral process requires a scientific study with a master's degree obtained at the HMDK Stuttgart or a comparable university. If this degree is missing, it can be completed through a postgraduate program at HMDK Stuttgart before admission to the doctoral process (for further regulations, see the "Promotionsordnung").

Interested individuals should initially contact the professors teaching in the fields of Musicology, Music Pedagogy, and Philosophy to have them assess whether the project is realistic and fits into the research context of the university. If the project is deemed feasible and supervision is assured, a formal application can be submitted to the doctoral committee through the examination office.

The artistic-scientific doctorate is currently in preparation.
