Hendrikje Mautner-Obst studied music, German language and literature, and musicology at the University of Music and Drama in Hanover and the University of Hanover. In 1999, she completed her studies with a doctorate in musicology on the topic "From Kitsch to Art: The Significance of Franz Werfel for the German Verdi Renaissance." From 1999 to 2002, she worked as a dramaturge and press officer at the National Theater Mannheim, and from 2002 to 2006 as a dramaturge at the Frankfurt Opera. In 2006, she was appointed as a junior professor for music mediation (“Musikvermittlung”) at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart. In addition, she taught in 2008 and 2009/10 as a lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt (Department of Applied Musicology). With the support of a fellowship from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, she completed further education in science management in 2008/09 at the University of Oldenburg). Since 2012, Hendrikje Mautner-Obst has been a professor of cultural mediation (“Kulturvermittlung”) / music sociology at HMDK Stuttgart. In 2013, she was elected as Vice-President for International Contacts and External Relations, and since 2017, she has been the Vice-President for International and Intercultural Communication. In January 2024, she was re-elected as Vice-President with a new focus on Third Mission and Scientific Research.
