Maker Space
Based on an initial idea by Professor Dr Karolin Schmitt-Weidmann, a Maker Space concept for the HMDK Stuttgart was developed and implemented in the academic year 2023/24 through a participatory process involving students, teachers from different departments, facility management and technical services, administration, and the rectorate. The aim was to create a learning environment that could be used for a wide range of teaching and learning scenarios at HMDK Stuttgart – from theoretical seminars to dance and performance – based on highly flexible and coordinated equipment features. Today, a complete rear building at Willy-Brandt-Straße 10 is available, housing two seminar rooms, an office, a storage room, and a kitchen. The idea list at hand was approached with the vision to continuously evolve, supplement, and redesign the Maker Space, additionally by expanding the “real” Maker Space with “mobile” and “virtual” spaces.
The “real” Maker Space
In addition to the rooms, corridors as well as a courtyard can also be used creatively. The design of the latter began in December 2024 as part of the interdisciplinary project seminar “Collective | Spaces | Building – Building | Collective | Spaces” under the direction of Maria Huber and is planned to be expanded in the future. This way, the indoor spaces can be extended into outdoor areas and used both openly and closed. In addition, the sofas and armchairs, the green plants, and the adjacent kitchen also invite everyone to linger and engage in freely designed exchanges, learning, and artistic interactions between classes.
The “virtual” Maker Space
The possibilities of this multidimensional spatial concept are explored in terms of their far-reaching potentials – especially through the connection of real and virtual space – within the framework of joint development of suitable teaching and learning concepts and are also integrated organizationally, institutionally, and curricularly. This space for common learning and action can, for example, be used in the context of service-learning-projects, workshops by external speakers in the Career Service-program as well as in various forms of third mission collaborations with partners outside the university, altogether contributing to the development of synergies that anchor the university in the heart of society.
