Institute for Organ & Historical Keyboard Instruments
The Institute for Organ & Historical Keyboard Instruments has almost 60 students, roughly half of whom are studying in the programs of Church Music or School Music, and the other half in artistic training.
Thanks to the international presence of the faculty members in concert life as well as in master classes, the Institute has a great impact beyond Germany. It is perceived worldwide as one of the most important training centers for organ studies and was one of the first in Germany around 1980 to consistently implement the insights of historical performance practice. Among the numerous alumni from many countries, there are laureates from almost all major international organ competitions.
A unique collection of eleven organs in different historical styles and more than 20 harpsichords, clavichords, and fortepianos enables stylistically appropriate work. Monthly organ tours and concerts make this collection accessible to the public and provide students with opportunities to gain concert experience. Regular organ excursions deepen the knowledge of important stylistic trends in organ building. Guest courses are offered for a focused study of specific repertoire areas. The Stuttgart Organ Academy, held since 2010, attracts students from all over the world.
The Institute's outstanding personnel and instrumental equipment are rooted in the history of the university. Its first rector was the organist Immanuel Faisst, and the training of pianists and organists has always been a major focus of the curriculum.
