Bachelor of Music – Percussion
In the Percussion Department at the HMDK Stuttgart, more than twenty students from eleven countries are currently studying (2024). They work with their professors Marta Klimasara, Klaus Dreher, Jürgen Spitschka, and Christian Hartmann on orchestral studies, solo and ensemble repertoire on marimba, vibraphone, timpani, drums, and other percussion instruments – ranging from the timpani part in Bach's Christmas Oratorio to Helmut Lachenmann's "Intérieur" for a percussion soloist, and from the major ensemble works of the last century by Cage and Xenakis to premieres of the latest scores.
The Percussion Department maintains close collaborations with the students and colleagues of the Jazz/Pop Department within the institution; internationally, the department cooperates with selected partner departments in Europe and Asia.
In the internationally renowned Percussion Ensemble Stuttgart and the student-led Ensemble TalkingDrums, percussionists regularly perform in the city, region, and abroad, in recent years including Korea, Poland, Norway, Denmark, France, and Switzerland. Representing the Stuttgart percussion tradition is the World Marimba Competition founded by the former head of the Percussion Department, Prof. Klaus Treßelt, together with Keiko Abe.
The department's work is also reflected in numerous student achievements (e.g., First Prizes at major international competitions: ARD Competition, Concours de Génève, Deutscher Musikwettbewerb, TROMP, among others), excellent networking with the concert and teaching landscape of the region (music schools, festivals, churches, etc.), and most pleasingly evident in the careers of many former graduates who now work as prominent orchestral musicians (Berlin Philharmonic, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Stuttgart State Orchestra, Bavarian State Opera, Teatro La Fenice Venice, among others), internationally acclaimed soloists, or distinguished university professors.
