Master Spoken Media

The Master Spoken Media focuses on the professionalization of speaking on the microphone. The standard course duration is 2 semesters for consecutive Master's programs and 4 semesters for non-consecutive Master's programs, including examination time. Students refine their speaking skills in preparation for work in the media. Graduates are able to work as speakers in various roles in media institutions and media companies. Specifically, they are expected to artistically and creatively shape various roles, particularly in audiobooks and radio plays, have extensive knowledge in analyzing and evaluating speaking performances on the microphone, possess advanced knowledge of the planning, format, structure, and practical implementation requirements of interviews and hosting in the media, be able to write their own texts in a media-appropriate manner, and be familiar with current forms and opportunities in quality management in radio broadcasting.

The main subject is at the center of the master's degree program, which takes place in group and individual lessons. In addition, students acquire competencies in mandatory subjects that are tailored to the main subject. In addition to practical subjects such as bodywork, breathing and voice training, role work (audiobook), theoretical foundations are acquired in subjects such as didactics and methodology of media communication, interviews and moderation in media, and speech science. Students studying in the non-consecutive master’s program also receive instruction in the art of speech, as well as literature and phonetics. Through independent practical work on audiobooks, conducting live broadcasts, or studio production, students are prepared to meet the diverse requirements of the media world and at the same time to reflect scientifically-theoretically on them in seminars on speech science. The acquired skills and abilities are implemented in audio productions, which culminate in two projects: a personal demo CD and an audiobook project.

At the end of the program, students complete an overall 8-week internship at a broadcasting station, which prepares them for the professional everyday life and allows them to align their future activities with the concrete working world. At the end of their studies, students submit a demo CD (with a duration of approximately 15 minutes) and provide a written reflection on an independently developed audiobook project (including current research questions). The final 60-minute exam consists of a presentation, demonstration, and introduction of the independently developed audiobook project, speaking of text types with preparation time, and sight-reading of factual texts.
