Master Opera
About the course
The Opera School Stuttgart with its Master Opera stands for training of high artistic quality as well as for extensive experience, expertise, and networking within the German-speaking and international opera scene. The rate of graduates who directly enter the workforce upon completion of studies is over 80%, which is very high in European comparison.
The study at the Opera School Stuttgart qualifies students for a smooth entry into the stage activities of an opera singer, especially in the German and European markets. Emphasis is placed on the individual development of a professional profile in various fields of stage work as a singer.
Key contents of the training include:
- Ability to practice the profession of a singer and related stage-musical and organizational-theatrical competencies
- Interdisciplinary aesthetic competence and ability for discourse
- Development of a personal artistic profile as a prerequisite for direct entry into the job market
- Competitiveness in the opera industry
The particularly intense stage-musical training includes musical work with pianists with international conducting experience, stage-musical classes (SMU), i.e., intensive work on opera ensembles and scenes with internationally experienced directors, acting, as well as intense language and style coaching in Italian, French, Russian, and German with native-speaking instructors specialized in singing and opera. The curriculum is complemented by seminars on theater studies, dramaturgy, and physical training including fencing, stage combat, and dance.
An intensive audition training lasting several weeks prepares comprehensively for auditions starting from the 3rd semester, and the graduates of the training participate in regular auditions for artistic directors and opera management of numerous theatres (Stuttgart, Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Ulm, Koblenz, Basel, Karlsruhe, among others), agencies, casting directors, and renowned casting consultants. A long-standing and trusting collaboration has been established with the Stuttgart State Opera, often leading to initial engagements for the students.
Intermittent master classes with internationally renowned directors (including Claus Guth, Willy Decker, Johannes Erath) and singers (including Michael Volle, Angela Denoke, Doris Soffel, Camilla Nylund) complement the training offer.
Regular study trips to selected opera metropolises are also part of the offerings of the Opera School. The Opera School Stuttgart is the founder of the European Forum of Opera Institutes (EFOI) network, which connects similar institutes at the European level and develops and pursues joint future-oriented concepts in the areas of research and teaching.
With its multicultural and international structure, the Opera School actively embodies diversity and inclusivity. It participates in the societal dialogue of the city of Stuttgart. The training is open to anyone who meets the admission requirements.
