Symposium Artistic Research

Reflexive perspectives in artistic practice

October 8–10, 2026

The overarching theme of the conference is:
Artistic Identity in Research Projects

Artists, researchers, students, and all those interested in artistic research are warmly invited to join us for a symposium reflecting a wide range of perspectives on artistic research in music, centered on Artistic Identity in Research Projects. Over three days, our event will bring together international perspectives on artistic research in music through presentations, lecture performances, concerts, and roundtables.

The symposium is organised by the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe and the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, with contributions from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (Frankfurt am Main), the Barenboim-Said Akademie (Berlin), and the ZKM Karlsruhe. We aim to create an open space for exchange on artistic identity and new forms of knowledge and musical experience emerging from artistic practice.

With Stephen Broad (EPARM, Glasgow), Rosemarie Brucher (Wien), Peter Dejans (Gent), Kristel Pappel (Tallinn), Bruno Pereira (Porto), Karolina Santl-Zupan (Ljubljana), Melanie Wald-Fuhrmann (Frankfurt/M.), among others.

Symposium Convener
Dr. Arabella Pare, HFM Karlsruhe
Prof. Dr. Matthias Hermann, HMDK Stuttgart
