Originally founded in a student initiative as the Baikonur Ensemble, and expanded in the following years into the working ensemble of the composer workshops, the echtzeitEnsemble has been the student "house ensemble" of the Studio Neue Musik since its founding in 2009, under the direction of Christof M Löser. Primarily dedicated to the (premiere) performance of student compositions, the ensemble also showcases a broad repertoire of 20th and 21st century music, as well as arrangements and experimental forms.

This is achieved through workshop concerts, the PolyEnsembleProjekt, and external performances, such as in 2009 at the major Cage exhibition at the Galerie Stihl in Waiblingen, and – together with the Neue Vocalsolisten – at the Sommer in Stuttgart Festival, as well as within the fringe program of the Donaueschingen Music Days in 2009 & 2010, and in concerts in the region.

A core group of students particularly interested in new music, including those from the new Master's program in New Music, come together in various formations ranging from chamber music to large mixed ensembles for project-based collaborations.
