Doctorate and postdoctoral Habilitation

Since 2003, the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart has the right to confer doctorate degrees in musicology and music pedagogy, since 2019 it has the right to confer doctorate degrees in philosophy. And since 2005, to award postdoctoral “habilitations”.

In order to register for the doctorate degree examination, you require a Master level degree awarded in a scientific program with the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart or with a comparable college. If you do not have this kind of degree, you will have the option to complete a postgraduate course of study at the University of Music Stuttgart. (For further information please refer to the doctorate regulations).

If you are interested, you should speak to any of the professors in musicology, music pedagogy and philosophy first and they will give you an evaluation as to how realistic your plan is and how it fits into the University’s research context. Provided that there are no objections to you studying for a doctorate and you have organized a supervising tutor, you will then be able to submit a formal application to the PhD committee through the exams office.
