EntranceExamCheck (EEC) for the classical field
In addition to the courses in music theory and aural training, we recommend taking advantage of the audition opportunities at the APC that are relevant to the intended degree programme and preparing well for these auditions.
Preparation in the (instrumental) major subject
Get in touch with our main subject teachers and ask for a non-binding audition. This will allow you to get to know our teachers and receive feedback and tips for your further preparation. Filter by the appropriate institute or subject on the People page.
Preparation in music theory / aural training
Option 1
To help you get to know us, we have put together sample entrance tests for music theory and aural training – including music examples and sample solutions.
Option 2
The Stuttgart Music School, for example, offers one and two-semester courses in music theory and aural skills in preparation for the entrance examination to music colleges.
Procedure for the EEC for the classical field
(orchestra rehearsal room on the 8th floor)
- 10 a.m.: mandatory registration for auditions in the afternoon
- 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.: music theory and aural training
- 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.: individual auditions (piano, vocals, rehearsing technique)
Additional information on the different elements of the EEC
At 10.00 a.m. you are asked to give an obligatory confirmation for the afternoon auditions in a daily list. This confirmation concerns all those who have registered for at least one individual audition (piano major/compulsory subject, singing major/compulsory subject, musical group leadership active/passive). This records who of the registered participants actually came. We kindly ask you to stick to the registered individual auditions as far as possible. (Also unfinished pieces or only part of the programme can be presented). On this basis, a plan will be drawn up for the afternoon auditions. By 1.30 pm, lists will be pinned on the outside door of the orchestra rehearsal room with the timetable for the auditions. These lists will also indicate the rooms in which the auditions take place and the names of the teachers.
Important: Only those who have registered on site by 10.30 a.m. will be listed for individual and group lessons. The schedule for all auditions is to take place between 14.00 and 17.00 hrs. Individual time requests cannot be taken into account.
For the individual auditions in the afternoon, corresponding teachers are available. For major subjects other than piano and voice, there are no audition opportunities at the EEC. Those who wish to contact a possible major subject teacher before the entrance exam can do this independently of the EEC - the contact details can be found on the website.
Piano auditions and singing auditions are possible both in the compulsory subject and major subject (please indicate this when registering). For the compulsory subject they take approx. 5-10 minutes at the EEC, for the major subject approx. 10-15 minutes. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide rooms for warming up. However, the EEC is primarily about counselling rather than a complete artistic performance.
In the morning block of music theory/listening training, these two entrance exams will be written and discussed together.
The workshop for the compulsory subject Musical Group Conducting is primarily aimed at school music applicants, but can also be taken by applicants in church music and choral conducting (see the entrance examination requirements). The application is made here either as ‘active’ or ‘passive’ participation. Those who register for ‘active’ participation must bring a simple vocal piece (in 15 copies), which they then rehearse with the ‘passive’ participants within approx. 3-5 minutes. Those who register for ‘passive participation’ will present themselves as a choir for the work of the ‘active participants’ and in this way gain a good insight into this entrance examination without having to prepare specifically. (To all who are aiming to study school music and do not want to be themselves ‘actively’ in musical group leading, this ‘passive’ participation is strongly recommended). At the beginning there is a general crash course in conducting. The workshop normally takes place in blocks of one hour, e.g. 14.00-15.00 hrs.
A half-hour workshop is offered as part of the EEC in practical school piano playing. This provides an overview of the entrance examination requirements, discusses cadenza playing, provides assistance with the selection of songs and demonstrates with the help of examples from different styles how these can be musically organised in terms of practical school piano playing. After the workshop, there will be an opportunity to clarify individual questions in a short personal discussion.
For those interested in the School Music degree programme with a Jazz & Pop major subject, there is a special case in the entrance examination that the major subject examination is taken in the area of jazz/pop, but the compulsory subjects must be completed in the classical area. In this respect, it is recommended to participate both in an classical EEC as well as a jazz/pop EEC.
Compulsory registration for the classical EEC
For participation in the EEC, a prior registration is required. This is done via an online form, which is available one and a half months before the next APC date. Simple participation only applies to music theory and listening training. Anyone wishing to use one or more of the audition options must explicitly state this when registering. The registration deadline is 10 days before the EEC day. After registration, this will be confirmed by e-mail.
