Gabriel Jones ist Musikwissenschaftler und Pianist. Er publizierte in Tempo, Twentieth-Century Music, Music Analysis, Music Performance Research und Frontiers in Psychology. Seine Forschung widmet sich dem Zusammenspiel von partiturbasierten, phonomusikologischen und künstlerischen Methoden in der Analyse und Rezeption Neuer Musik sowie der vermittelnden Rolle der Technologie in diesen Prozessen. Derzeit untersucht er diese Fragestellungen im Rahmen eines dreijährigen, vom FWF geförderten ESPRITPostdoc- Projekts an der Kunstuniversität Graz.

Performances of New Music often have complex and profoundly contingent relationships with their scores. Perceptually meaningful analysis should therefore consider the combined application of score-based, phonomusicological, and artistic research methods. In this presentation, musicologist and pianist Gabriel Jones will share case studies on piano music by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Rebecca Saunders that demonstrate this flexible methodology, making the case for an ecological approach to the analysis of New Music.
