Pianistinnen und Pianisten rund um den Globus wünschten, Sie hätten bei der Klaviaturmensur eine Wahl, um mit unterschiedlichsten Händen gewähltes Repertoire voller Vertrauen und ohne Beschwerden spielen zu können. Dr. Carol Leone, Professorin für Klavier und Leiterin des Instituts Klavier an der SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas, konzertiert und unterrichtet seit 25 Jahren an Flügeln mit schmaleren Tasten. In ihrer Vortragsdemonstration wird sie deren zahlreiche Vorteile erläutern und Fragen zur Einführung dieser wichtigen Innovation beantworten. Carol Leone war bereits 2022 mit ihrem Online-Vortrag "Increasing Performance Potential. Alternatively Sized Keyboards" an der HMDK Stuttgart zu Gast. Wir freuen uns sehr, die Wegbereiterin der „stretto keys“ an nordamerikanischen Universitäten nun auch persönlich in Stuttgart begrüßen zu dürfen.

Die amerikanische Pianistin und Universitätsprofessorin Carol Leone tritt als Solistin und Kammermusikerin in den USA, Europa und Asien auf. Als erfolgreiche Aufnahmekünstlerin ist Leone bei den Labels MSR Classics, Gasparo, Crystal und Augusta Read Thomas zu hören. Ihre CD „Change of Keys“ bei MSR Classics wurde 2016 mit zwei Silver Global Awards ausgezeichnet. Die Zeitschrift Fanfare schrieb über diese Aufnahme: „Leone spielt mit Schwung und Glanz und mit viel Witz.“ Die Dallas Morning News schrieb über ihr Mozartspiel: „leuchtender Ton … sie entführte uns in eine andere, ganz magische Welt.“ Dr. Leone ist Professorin für Klavier und Leiterin des Instituts Klavier an der SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas. Leone studierte bei dem legendären polnischen Pianisten Mieczysław Horszowski am Curtis Institute of Music, wo sie das Performance Certificate erwarb. Sie war Schülerin von Guido Agosti in Rom, nachdem sie das begehrte Ehrendiplom an der Accademia Chigiana in Siena erhalten hatte. Schließlich promovierte sie am UNT College of Music. Leone war bei mehreren nationalen Klavierwettbewerben erfolgreich, unter anderem erhielt sie den ersten Preis beim National Beethoven Sonata Piano Competition.
An der SMU tritt sie häufig als Konzertsolistin mit dem SMU Meadows Symphony Orchestra und im Klaviertrio der Fakultät mit dem Geiger Aaron Boyd und dem Cellisten Andres Diaz auf. Auch mit dem Grammy-nominierten Ensemble für zeitgenössische Musik Voices of Change ist sie regelmäßig zu hören. Im Laufe ihrer 40-jährigen Karriere als Universitätsprofessorin für Klavier hat Dr. Leone eine vielfältige Gruppe von talentierten Studierenden unterrichtet. Viele von ihnen haben beachtliche künstlerische Erfolge erzielt und Aufnahmen eingespielt sowie angesehene Universitätsprofessuren und einflussreiche Führungspositionen in der Musikbranche übernommen. In den letzten Jahren war Leone als Gastlehrerin oder -Dozentin an der Juilliard School, dem Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, dem Trinity Laban Conservatory London, der Shanghai Normal University und mehreren italienischen Konservatorien tätig. Sie unterrichtete bei Sommerfestivals in Moskau, Wien, Südkorea, der Tschechischen Republik und Italien und lehrt regelmäßig bei der Summer Academy der Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italien. Als führende Fürsprecherin und Präsentatorin von Flügeln und Klavieren mit schmaleren Klaviaturen hat Dr. Leone eine weltweite Bewegung zur Transformation von pianistischer Kunst und pianistischem Wohlbefinden inspiriert. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des globalen Netzwerks „Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards“, des jährlich stattfindenden International Stretto Piano Festival und Vorstandsmitglied der DS Standard Foundation.

Dr. Carol Leone, Chair and Professor of Piano at SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas has been performing and teaching on alternatively sized keyboards for acoustic pianos for 25 years. In her lecture demonstration, she will explain their many advantages and answer your questions about implementing this important innovation in a university setting. Carol Leone has already been a guest lecturer at the HMDK Stuttgart with her online presentation "Increasing Performance Potential. Alternatively Sized Keyboards" in 2022. Carol Leone
American pianist and university professor Carol Leone is active as a soloist and chamber musician, appearing throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. A successful recording artist, Leone can be heard on MSR Classics, Gasparo, Crystal, and Augusta Read Thomas labels. Her recording, “Change of Keys” on MSR Classics garnered two 2016 Silver Global Awards. Of this recording, Fanfare magazine stated, “Leone plays with drive and sparkle, and with plenty of wit.” Dallas Morning News wrote of her Mozart playing, “luminous tone… she took us into another, quite magical world.” Dr. Leone is Chair of Piano Studies and Professor of Piano at SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas. Leone studied with legendary Polish pianist Mieczysław Horszowski at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she received the Performance Certificate. She was a student of Guido Agosti in Rome after earning the coveted Honors Diploma at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. She ultimately earned her doctorate from the UNT College of Music. Leone was successful in several national piano competitions, including being awarded first prize in the National Beethoven Sonata Piano competition.
At SMU, she has performed frequently as concerto soloist with the SMU Meadows Symphony Orchestra and as part of a faculty piano trio with violinist Aaron Boyd and cellist Andres Diaz. She has also performed regularly with the Grammy-nominated contemporary music ensemble Voices of Change. Over the course of her 40-year career as a university piano professor, Dr. Leone has taught a diverse group of talented students. Many have achieved notable success, becoming recording artists, esteemed university professors, and influential leaders within the profession. Leone has recently served as a guest teacher or lecturer at The Juilliard School, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, Trinity Laban Conservatory in London, Shanghai Normal University, and several Italian conservatories. She has served on the music faculty of summer festivals in Moscow, Vienna, South Korea, the Czech Republic, and Italy, and is regularly on the summer piano faculty of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. A leading advocate and presenter of pianos with narrower keyboards, Dr. Leone has energized a worldwide movement to transform pianists’ artistry and wellness. She was a co-founder of the global movement Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards and of the annual International Stretto Piano Festival and currently serves on the board of directors for the DS Standard Foundation.
Die Zukunftsinitiative SIRIUS 6.0 der HMDK Stuttgart (2020) zielt auf höhere Entfaltung künstlerischen Potentials, die Prävention von spieltechnischer Überanstrengung sowie Chancengleichheit und Geschlechtergerechtigkeit. SIRIUS 6.0 Klaviaturen lassen Hände um eine ½ Taste pro Oktave wachsen. Seit 2024 können Pianistinnen und Pianisten dies an einem Steinway D-Konzertflügel der HMDK Stuttgart erleben – erstmalig in Europa!
Wissenschaftliche Grundlage sind Spannweiten-Daten von Pianistinnen und Pianisten, Korrelationen von spielbedingten muskuloskelettalen Überlastungssyndromen und kleinen Spannweiten, schmaler mensurierte Hammerflügel 1785-1825 und der Gender-Gap bei Elite-Klavierwett-bewerben.
