    Studying has not been basically suspended since July 1st, 2020. Presential studying activities are only allowed in compliance with the strict hygiene regulations, in order to protect the health of all. Distance Learning (online lessons) is being offered without any restrictions. The same applies to events, organized by the University.

    For each single study course and for all University public events, data collection in accordance with Section 6 CoronaVO is mandatory. Since the follow-up of infection chains can only effectively take place if the various composition of the participants in different events is reflected by data collection. For this purpose, the forms for documentation of stay are to be used and filled in when entering the building.

    Inform the University immediately so that arrangements and provisions can be made.

    Above all:
    What does a member of the University (academic staff, students, admin staff) have to do, if they have been tested positive?

    • Strictly restraining order / No entry at all to the University buildings!
    • The strict entry ban already applies if you show symptoms of a respiratory infection or elevated / high temperature

    The health authorities and doctors determine the further procedure. Please inform the University so that support can be provided.

    Please remember the rules for staying at the University:

    1. Distance rule:Wherever possible, a minimum distance of two (2) metres but at least 1.5 metres must be maintained from other people (§ 3 Abs. 1 CoronaVO)

    2. „Everyday protection masks“: Please wear so-called everyday masks over your nose and mouth wherever possible.

    3. In all rooms only a specific number of people are permitted to enter, in order to observe and follow the distance rules. The permitted number of people is indicated outside the venues for each larger room. The 20-person rule additionally applies: gatherings and meetings of more than twenty people are prohibited (§ 9 Abs. 1 CoronaVO).

    4. Data collection: Data collection in accordance with Section 6 CoronaVO is mandatory for each single study course and for every University-related public event. The follow-up of infection chains can only effectively take place if the various composition of the participants of different events is reflected by data collection . When entering the building, the forms for documentation the stay must be filled out.

    5. Offices of the Administration may only be visited by wearing everyday masks. They should only be entered after explicit request by the respective colleagues.

    6. Library is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    7. Suppliers, service providers and craftsmen should contact their individual contacts at the University. Authorized persons have to report at the gate and identify themselves.

    8. Entry is prohibited: You are not allowed to enter the University building if you are or have been in contact with an infected person, or if it has not been 14 days since you had contact with an infected person, or if you show typical symptoms of a Coronavirus infection (7 CoronaVO).

    9. Entry to Germany: The country's entry and return requirements and regulations are applying.
      The risk areas are published on the website of the Ministry of Social Affairs:


    • The computer room of the AStA has reopened, please follow the rules for ventilation. 
The HORADS corner on the 7th level of the University building has been reopened. There are single workstations with WiFi access.

    • The rest area and the seating area on the 7th level remain shut off for the time being.

    • Current regulations regarding the operation of the cafeteria by the Studierendenwerk can be found in the CoronaVO or on the website of the Studierendenwerk. The cafeteria has been and will be offering a reduced range of meals since Monday 8, 2020.

    • Common rooms in the Opera School and the Drama School, recreation rooms in the Old Music Academy at the Urbansplatz and the rooftop terrace remain closed for the time being.

    The University’s Management expressly recommends teaching to align to the ordinance of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Social Affairs on the operation of Music Schools, Art Schools and Youth Art Schools (Corona Ordinance Music, Art and Youth Art Schools - CoronaVO Music, Art and Youth Art Schools) of June 25, 2020.
    This means for example to maintain a distance of at least 2 meters during the entire lesson and to carry out the cleaning of the instrument regulated there.
    The University’s Management also expressly recommends that sport and exercise regulations of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Social Affairs on sport (Corona Regulation Sport - CoronaVO Sport) of 25 June 2020 is being observed. This means, for example, that a distance of at least 1.5 meters should be maintained between all present persons during the entire training and exercise units; this does not include sports, games and exercise situations that are customary for training or the exercise unit. In addition, training or exercise pairs that are as solid as possible should be formed.
    Restricted practicing operation is open since April 27, 2020. Spaces that have no ventilation options are locked.  Some of them could have been opened in cooperation with the AstA, from June 29, 2020 - under strict hygiene requirements.

    It is quite clear that artistic teaching cannot simply be "switched" to online lessons. Therefore we hope that you are all in contact with your major and minor subject lecturers and professors.

    An E-Learning working group, led by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Platz is preparing solutions for online offers in the scientific/theoretical subjects.

    From now on, please register directly by Email with the respective lecturer whose seminars/lectures you would like to attend.




    A suitable option for many students could be the so-called "semester splitting".
    In this case, classes are being split from one semester to two semesters, i.e. you will be credited with half of the main subject's teaching load for the summer semester, and the other half for the winter semester. The semester is then not counted further, which is important for BAFöG recipients.
     A splitting of a semester can be applied for informally by Email to Prof. Dr. Matthias Hermann. In this way, students do not have a break in classes until October, as would be the case for a semester on leave of absence. In this case, tuition fees will be divided between both semesters, i.e. halved in each case.

    Extension of deadline

    In view of the current situation, it is more important to prevent the virus from spreading than to meet deadlines.

    Therefore the University is offering facilities for important dates and deadlines. Please take into consideration that the University can only influence deadlines set by ourselves. The following exemptions therefore apply to the following deadlines and dates:

    •     Enrollment: The application for extension must be sent in written form or by email to the Exam Office.
    •     Re-Enrollment: The application for extension must be sent in written form or by email to the Exam Office.

    For these deadlines and dates applies that they can be extended generously by requesting. Please submit the application in written form or by email.


    Despite the Corona crisis and the circumstances caused by, all lecturers and academic staff of the University are trying to develop a course offer that is adapted to the situation, in order to prepare courses, that can be offered at least partially and to a limited extent. The preparations are not yet complete.Please bear in mind that it is not yet clear in all cases whether and how a seminar, exercise, lecture or other types of events can take place

    Exams are possible to be carried out until July 31, 2020 and then again from September 1, 2020 until

    The University has determined the following for final and entrance exams: 

    All students who want to take part in the final exams, can take part in the final exam in July. If that's too early for some students, they can  take the final exam in October and may then be admitted to follow-up studies (extended enrollment period).

    Conducting exams will take place in October without any exception (1st semester week from October 5, 2020).

    Courses and lessons that cannot be held (Orchestra, Opera, Big Band, Choir, Drama, etc.) are counted as a one-off participation.

    In the Faculty of ​​Chamber Music, Choral Conducting, Jazz Ensemble and other group / ensemble work, distance regulations may be adhered to.

    Online Exams are being graded too.

    Upon request, the semester is calculated as a splitting (= half) semester.

    Study/ Course extensions due to Corona (COVID-19) pandemic are granted generously.

    Entrance exams in the summer semester take place as late as possible. A later date/ appointment is counterproductive for foreign applicants (due to processing time for visa applications). It is assumed that you may travel again in late June / early July. Alternatively, entrance exams would be organized in September.

    The deadline for Registration for the Final Exam will be extended to May 15, 2020.

    For the time being, the following applies to the accessibility of colleagues in the administration departments:

    • Core hours are 10 a.m. to noon. Please note that in view of the health of our colleagues, deviations from core time can be approved at any time.

    • Offices of the administration staff may only be visited for compelling reasons and only with everyday masks. Always try to approach them first by telephone or by Email.
      Please also use the blue mailboxes, next to the gate/ reception , e.g. for handing in documents!

    • You are only allowed to enter the offices of the administration after explicit request.

    Orders and contracts/confirmations are being sent

    The University management continues to assume that the classes planned for the 2020 Summer Semester, i.e. the agreed number of hours can be given by the end of the semester - if necessary also on weekends, public holidays and during the semester break. All Music Universities from Baden-Württemberg have informed the Ministry of Science, Research and Art that there is an urgent need for clarification. The University management is working to ensure clarity by early April. Against this background, no teaching assignments will expire and no tutor contracts will be concluded until the beginning of April. About the current situation we will reporting in early April.

    Business trips are to be limited to an absolute minimum. Traveling to the risk areas designated by the RKI is prohibited. Business trips to the COVID risk areas will not be approved until further notice. Permits that have already been issued will be revoked.

    All lecturers, students and researchers returning from the risk areas classified by the Robert Koch Institute must comply with a two-week self-quarantine. In principle, this also applies to excursions. The Rectorate of the University strongly recommends that business trips and excursions should also be avoided or canceled in the Summer Semester 2020.

    Since July 1, 2020 public events can happen again. To protect the health of all, strict hygiene measures must be observed. Public events can only be carried out under the direction of the KBB or under the direction of the Wilhelma Theater.
    Basically the following applies: a maximum of 100 people can take part in an event. Events with more than 100 people are currently not possible being carried out - due to the spatial conditions. The number of places that can be offered per event must be limited, so that the applicable distance rules can be granted. Queues should be avoided both at the beginning at the entrance and after the end of the event.

    The duration of the event should be limited to 70 minutes. Breaks and Catering is not provided, cloakroom use is not being offered. Seating cannot be freely chosen by the participants of the event, but are allocated by the HMDK employees.
    Several stations for hand disinfection are available to the participants - in addition to the toilets with soap and paper towels.
    In the toilets which are closest to the event rooms, you will find instructions for thorough hand washing. The access to the event rooms is regulated by the HMDK staff and supported by coloured floor markings. One-way regulations are being implemented wherever possible.
    The event rooms must show ventilation facilities. HMDK will ensure that these rooms are regularly and sufficiently ventilated. The event venues are professionally cleaned on a regular basis.
    For the purpose of providing information to the Public Health Department or the Local Police Authority the HMDK will, in an appropriate manner, check the permissible data of the participants of the event.
    This data contains:

    • First and last name of the participant
    • Date of participation in the event and as far as possible: Beginning and end of the participation event
    • Telephone number of the participant

    The HMDK will ensure that only those participants who provide complete data, will take part in the event. The data will be stored in compliance with the current data protection regulations and will be destroyed four weeks after the event in accordance with data protection regulations.

    The distance requirement and the 20-person rule apply to classroom instructions.

    Exceptions for exams in large rooms can be approved by the Head of the exam upon notification to the rectorate.

    The decree of the Ministry of Social Affairs on "Containment of Transmission of the Corona Virus (SARS-CoV-2) at Events" (status: 29.05.2020) creates the possibility to resume event operations under special conditions and with restrictions.
    The number of seats that can be allocated per event must be limited so that the applicable distance rules can be adhered to. The seating capacity is as follows: Concert Hall (72 seats), Chamber Music Hall (25 seats), Wilhelma Theatre (60 seats). The orchestra rehearsal room is actually not available for public events.

    Queues must be avoided both at the entrance before the event starts and at the exit at the end of the event. The duration of the event should not exceed 70 minutes. Breaks in between and catering will not be provided, nor will be the use of cloakrooms. Seats are not freely selectable by the participants of the event, but will be allocated by the HMDK staff. Access to the event rooms will be regulated by HMDK staff and, if possible, supported by coloured floor markings. One-way street regulations are implemented wherever possible.

    The culture master plan of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (see provides a step-by-step opening for opera houses, theaters and orchestras:
    “In the area of theaters, stages, socio-cultural centers, concert halls and other cultural venues, we are also planning a successive opening in the coming weeks. The areas in front of, on and behind the stage must be taken into account. Small artistic event formats with fewer than 100 participants should be taken place again from June 1, 2020, if the room/ venue conditions allow it and the compliance with hygiene and distance requirements to protect the public and the participants can be guaranteed. […] The legal requirements for this are created in the Corona Regulation, in time. Further steps to enabling events will follow.“
    We also will develop formats for events in the near future. Please check the University website.

    All public events and concerts are cancelled until July 31, 2020. Larger events, festivals, competitions and so on will be rescheduled if possible.

    Conferences, meetings and other public events with external participants should not take place until the resumption of teaching.     Interim financial aid funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
    Interim financial aid provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is intended to help those students who can prove that they are faced with financial hardship caused by the pandemic, who need immediate help and are unable to overcome their pandemic-related hardship by making use of other support. Interim financial aid can be applied for by German and foreign students who are enrolled at a public or state-recognised higher education institution in Germany.

    Fees from International Students and Second-degree Students

    The HMDK University will request at the “Landesrektorenkonferenz” that all Universities of Music are urging the responsible persons  in the Ministry in order to waive the fees for International and Second-degree Students for this Summer Semester 2020.


    As the Federal Ministry of Education and Research announced by decree, the postponement of the start of lectures will in no way affect the BAföG entitlement. Students (regardless of whether they are in their first semester or are already receiving funding) do not currently have to fear that they will not receive any money in April 2020. Also Self-studying  and Online Studies count as study activities.

    Find out more from the Office for Training Funding. It is important that the BAföG application must be submitted by April 2020 at the latest, unless you have received a BAföG notification for the Summer Semester 2020.

    Term summer semester extended - StudiTicket valid until 31 October

    The duration of the summer semester 2020 will be extended to 31 October 2020 for all student courses and for all universities. This means that the validity of the following student offers is extended until 31 October 2020:

    • The StudiTicket
    • The connecting StudiTicket
    • The leisure regulation with the student card (for trips from Monday to Friday between 18:00 and 05:00 the following day as well as all-day on weekends and public holidays)

    From August VVS-StudiTicket with flexible validity start date

    As of August 1, 2020, StudiTicket and connecting StudiTicket will generally have a flexible validity start date. In concrete terms, this means that these tickets with a validity start date of the first of each month can be purchased for a period of six months. They are no longer bound to the term of the semester. The following additional information is provided:

    • Advance sales will continue to be made one month before the start of the ticket validity period, as has been the case up to now. So if you want to use the ticket from November onwards, you must buy it in October.

    • Online-StudiTickets can only be purchased in the respective semester, due to the electronic authorization check. For the online purchase a matriculation number is required. Example: Semester period from 01.10. to 31.03. = purchase with validity beginning 01.10., 01.11., 01.12., 01.01., 01.02., 01.03. (within the advance booking period for two months each).

    • Students are free to choose the first month in which the ticket is valid; the StudiTicket or follow-up StudiTicket is valid for six calendar months from the first month of validity.

    • The entitlement to purchase a StudiTicket (valid student ID with VVS imprint as well as Verbundpass or polygoCard) or a connecting StudiTicket must still be presented when purchasing the ticket at a VVS sales point. This entitlement must be valid for at least the first month in which the StudiTicket or connecting StudiTicket is valid.

    VVS subscriptions are valid throughout Baden-Württemberg during the summer holidays

During the summer holidays, all VVS permanent customers may use local transport throughout Baden-Württemberg from 30 July to 13 September 2020 without having to buy an extra ticket. From morning to night, no matter how often. This also applies to holders of a StudiTicket or a connecting StudiTicket. The ticket must be valid between 30 July and 13 September 2020.
