Student assistants / tutors

    Requirements for employment

    Students who are enrolled in a degree programme leading to a university degree can be employed as artistic/scientific assistants (tutors). Employment is on a fixed-term basis with less than half the working hours of public service employees and is permitted for a maximum of six years (§ 57 LHG).
    The artistic/scientific assistant is not in the 1st or 2nd semester. The maximum number of semester hours per week is 8 SWS. In the 3rd or 4th semester, a maximum of 4 SWS can be approved.

    The employment contract

    After your binding acceptance, you will receive an e-mail with all the necessary documents for a tutorial. Please submit the documents as soon as possible, as the employment relationship is not established until the employment contract is signed and the salary payment can only be made afterwards.

    Your documentation obligations

    As a student, you must participate in the documentation of your working hours. The university provides an Excel spreadsheet for these records. The list must be signed off by the relevant head of department. This is based on § 17 Para.1 S. 1 MiLoG in conjunction with § 1 MiLoAufzV.


    Payment is made at the end of each month by the Landesamt für Besoldung und Versorgung (LBV). Due to the procedure and the processing times involved, it is possible that your first salary will not be included in the payment run at the end of the month, even if you have signed the application and contract immediately. You will then receive your first salary payment together with your second.
    Maximum rates of remuneration for student assistants:
    Student assistants at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart will receive € 12 /hour from the summer semester 2022.
